Verwoerdburgstad Retro Board
Just off the R21..........
Origins: The area started as Lyttelton Township, marked out on the farm Droogegrond in 1904. It was mainly inhabited by Afrikaans-speaking people.
City Status: In 1964, Lyttelton was granted City Council status by combining the areas of Doornkloof, Irene, and Lyttelton.
Renaming to Verwoerdburg: In 1967, after the assassination of former Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd, the city was renamed Verwoerdburg in his honor.
Renaming to Centurion: On 28 June 1995, the name was changed to Centurion to move away from apartheid-era associations.
Today, Centurion is part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, located between Pretoria and Midrand.
Development: The area grew rapidly, becoming a major residential and business hub. Centurion Mall, originally opened in 1984 during the Verwoerdburg era, became a landmark for the region. It was originally named Verwoerdburgstad.
| These boards are made from soft steel and can be mounted on the wall, either by the folded strip at the back, or holes can be drilled at the allocated spaces indicated. This is ideal for outside areas, like an enclosed braai area etc. This is an awesome conversation starter! |
