Walvis Bay, meaning “Whale Bay” in Afrikaans (originally Walfischbucht in German), is a coastal city in Namibia known for its natural deep‑water harbor protected by the Pelican Point sand spit.
First charted by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1487, it became a whaling and trading hub under Dutch and British colonial authorities in the late 18th century. Retained as a British enclave during German colonization in 1884, it was annexed into South Africa in 1910, then reintegrated into Namibia in 1994—four years after Namibian independence
