- 1881: Vacuum Oil products were first distributed in South Africa by Skada & Company in Cape Town. Vacuum Oil later became part of Mobil’s lineage.
- 1911: South Africa became the first country to trademark the iconic red Pegasus symbol, which would become synonymous with Mobil.
- 1931: Socony (Standard Oil of New York) merged with Vacuum Oil to form Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, laying the foundation for Mobil.
- 1955: Mobil built South Africa’s first lubricants blending plant, capable of producing over 30,000 tonnes annually.
- 1960s–1970s: Mobil became a major player in South Africa’s petroleum industry, introducing advanced lubricants and synthetic oils.
- 1980s: Mobil was one of the largest U.S. investors in South Africa during apartheid, operating refineries, depots, and over 1,100 service stations. It faced criticism for its stance on sanctions and its economic role during this period.
- 1993: Mobil’s retail operations in South Africa were rebranded as Engen, which remains a leading fuel brand today.
- 1999: Mobil merged globally with Exxon to form ExxonMobil, continuing to operate in South Africa mainly through lubricants and upstream exploration
