Remember when airfares was low?

Mango Airlines SOC Ltd was launched on 30 October 2006 as a low-cost subsidiary of South African Airways (SAA).

Its first flight took place on 15 November 2006.

The airline was headquartered at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Gauteng, and operated primarily domestic routes with some regional flights in Southern Africa.

Mango was 100% owned by SAA, which itself is state-owned, but Mango operated independently with its own board and balance sheet.

Mango became known for its bright orange branding, affordable fares, and a simple service model where passengers paid for extras like baggage and meals.

It played a major role in making air travel accessible to a broader demographic in South Africa.

Initially successful, Mango planned to join Star Alliance as a Connecting Partner in 2016, but this was shelved due to SAA’s financial troubles.

Over time, Mango faced mounting debts and operational challenges.

  • April 2021: Mango was grounded due to unpaid debts to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).

    • July 2021: Entered voluntary business rescue and suspended operations.
    • August 2022: Its operating license was suspended for two years by the Air Services Licensing Council.
    • 2023–2025: Attempts to revive Mango failed; by mid-2025, liquidation was the only option.
