Lüderitz began as Angra Pequena, named by Bartolomeu Dias in 1487.

In 1883, German trader Franz Adolf Lüderitz purchased the bay area, making it the first German colonial foothold in South West Africa.

The town later boomed after diamonds were discovered in 1908 in the nearby desert.

Today it’s known for its German Art Deco architecture, harsh Atlantic coastline, and proximity to the ghost town Kolmanskop
