Joubert Park is Johannesburg’s oldest public park, established in 1887 at the request of the Diggers’ Committee and named after General Piet Joubert, the town’s first mining commissioner.

Initially, the land was ploughed in 1891 and planted with seeds and seedlings, later enhanced with indigenous trees, an ornamental fountain, and a conservatory by 1898.

By 1906, it was officially donated to the Johannesburg Municipality for public recreation and amusement.

Historically, Joubert Park was a premier leisure space during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting British colonial ideals of respectability and civic virtue.

It served as a green oasis for promenading and social gatherings in the bustling mining town.

The park was closely linked to the Johannesburg Art Gallery and envisioned as part of grand urban designs by architects like Edwin Lutyens, though many plans were never fully realized.

As for Christmas lights, while Joubert Park itself does not have a deeply documented tradition of festive lighting comparable to places like Adderley Street in Cape Town, historical accounts suggest that during Johannesburg’s early decades, the park and surrounding streets were focal points for seasonal celebrations.

n the mid-20th century, the inner city—including areas near Joubert Park—featured festive decorations and lights as part of municipal efforts to create a sense of civic pride and holiday cheer.

These traditions waned during periods of urban decline but have seen occasional revivals through community and city initiatives aimed at bringing vibrancy back to the CBD

These boards are made from soft steel and can be mounted on the wall, either by the folded strip at the back, or holes can be drilled at the allocated spaces indicated. This is ideal for outside areas, like an enclosed braai area etc.

This is an awesome conversation starter!
