Gariep Dam is South Africa’s largest dam—an 88 m-high arch‑gravity wall on the Orange River—completed in 1971 to provide irrigation, municipal water, and hydropower (360 MW).
Originally named Hendrik Verwoerd Dam, it was renamed Gariep (“river” in Khoekhoe) in 1996.
The vast reservoir spans about 374 km², feeding irrigation tunnels to the Fish and Sundays rivers and supporting boating, fishing, and eco-tourism.
Nestled between Johannesburg and Cape Town along the N1, it’s a popular halfway stop—offering water sports, game viewing, hiking, lodging, and tours of the dam wall
