Fountains Valley Retro Board
Fountains Valley in Pretoria is one of South Africa’s oldest recreational resorts and nature reserves.
It was officially proclaimed as a reserve by President Paul Kruger on 1 February 1895, making it part of the oldest nature conservation areas on the African continent, alongside Groenkloof Nature Reserve.
The area spans about 60 hectares, with the Apies River flowing through it, and features natural springs, picnic spots, and historic ruins like the house of Lucas Cornelius Bronkhorst, an early settler linked to the Great Trek.
As for train rides, Fountains Valley itself doesn’t have a long-standing railway history, but it became a popular stop for heritage steam train excursions in Pretoria.
These nostalgic rides—such as those offered by the Tshwane Explorer and Wonder Steam Trains—recreate the golden age of rail travel.
They typically start from Hermanstad Station in Pretoria and pass through scenic routes, sometimes including areas near Fountains Valley. These experiences aim to revive the charm of vintage steam locomotives, which were central to South Africa’s transport history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
| These boards are made from soft steel and can be mounted on the wall, either by the folded strip at the back, or holes can be drilled at the allocated spaces indicated. This is ideal for outside areas, like an enclosed braai area etc. This is an awesome conversation starter! |
